Welcome to the Natural Science Class, Second Year!
Our first meeting will be Tuesday morning, 5 September 2017 at 11:00am EDT (which translates to 8:00am PDT for those of us on the west coast). Before that meeting, you should verify that you can access the Moodle and that Natural Science Year 2 is listed on your Moodle home page. You should also become familiar with this website. If you have problems with Moodle access or chat, contact Tech Support (firstname.lastname@example.org).
- Links on the left side of general pages (like this one), and in the header of lecture pages, provide access to general information about the course.
- Overview. This is a brief outline of the material covered in the course, the course approach and level, and the prerequisites. You can use this description in any transcripts or reports you make to officials or on college applications to describe this course.
- Procedures. This page carefully explains what I expect of students, how chats, homework, and examinations work, and some suggestions to help students study for this course. One of the links from this page explains some conventions we have found practical for chat classroom behavior--please read them!
- Texts. This describe how we will use the website and suggests some optional tests.
- Labs. This page contains general information on how to do labs for "lab credit" (which is optional), and links to some science equipment suppliers. If you plan on getting lab credit for this course, you must read the lab safety page and send me a signed, paper copy of the parental agreement to supervise labs.
- FAQs. This page contains some commonly asked questions about my courses, including a link to my evolution page, which contains some FAQs on my attitude and expectations regarding evolution theory and creationism. If you can't find an answer here, though, please email me!
- Dr. Christe's Home Page contains links to other Scholars Online science courses.
- Links in the left column of the page connect you to material for enrolled students.
- Quizzes at the Moodle course site. The Natural Science course page at the Moodle will contain the online quiz that you will take once for each section, after we have finished dicussing it in class and you have had a chance to ask questions on the homework. Your Moodle grades will be available to you throughout the year.
- Forums (Bulletin Boards). The Moodle course site will also host general forums and unit forums for the course. Since only the rest of the class will see your postings, you should feel free to use these to ask questions and contact each other about class business, and to continue discussions for which we may not have time in class. You will also need to post your answers to assigned homework problems to this center prior to each chat session
- Lecture Schedule. The schedule links to your Homework unit, the history and science weblectures for that unit, and the lab exercise. It shows the dates we meet, as well as holidays and the examination schedule. Please review this early in the year so that you can identify conflicts and let me know when you must miss class.
- Student Survival Guide. This guide has information about how to study science, find the web lectures, use the text, complete the homework problems, prepare for quizzes and exams, form study groups to work together, do labs and write lab reports, and use other web resources.
- Parents Guide. This contains information for parents to use to help their students perform well. It includes a summary of expectations for student performance, suggestions for study helps and checklists to use in determining whether the student is completing all the work on time.
