Chapter 10: African Societies and Kingdoms
1000 B.C.E. to 1500 C.E.

Please post in the forum for the day a short essay in response to this question:

Trade, government, and large communities in Imperial and Legalist China, in Alexander’s Hellenistic Empire, and in Islamic Caliphates were facilitated in each case by the development of a common written language, sometimes enforced by governments to facilitate administration, sometimes by religious authorities to consolidate religious observance and orthodoxy. How was the growth and development of communities different in Africa? What factors limited the development and maintenance of larger, stable communities?
