Some of the most conspicuous and impressive legacies of medieval life and spirituality are to be found in the great cathedrals. They were, of course, first and foremost churches through which the bishops exercised their sacramental and ecclesiastical authority, but they also had a number of other functions as well. How did they serve also the interests of the intellectual, commercial, and political lives of the cities?
