Textbook Assignment: Chapter 33: Control Systems in Plants, sections 1-8.
- 33.1 Studies of phototropism (the tendency of plants to turn toward light) reveal the activity of hormones in plants. The experiments conducted by Charles and Francis Darwin, Peter Boysen-Jensen, and Frits Went also provide a good example of proper experimental techniques, including the use of controls.
- 33.2 Five major groups of hormones control plant growth and development.
- 33.3 Auxins stimulate the elongation of cells in shoots and roots.
- 33.4 Cytokinins stimulate cell division.
- 33.5 Gibberellins affect stem elongation and fruit development.
- 33.6 Abscisic acid inhibits plant processes; when washed out of seeds by water or broken down by cold weather, seeds come out of dormancy.
- 33.7 Ethylene produced in the tissues of ripening fruits causes ripening to continue; retard ripening by flushing the ethylene.
- 33.8 Synthetic or extracted plant hormones are used in agriculture to stimulate plant responses and control crop production, but also to control undesirable plants such as weeds.
