This chapter deals primarily with intellectual and cultural change; in particular, it focuses on the rise of nationalism and socialism. What intellectual and cultural resources do the proponents of nationalism and socialism draw on to engage followers in their causes? What resources are used to accomplish their goals within institutions such as businesses and governments? How are these resources used positively to improve the lives of some people, and negatively to suppress others?
