Below are notes on the main points of each assignment.
We recognize that part of "science as a human endeavor" is the reception and acceptance or rejection of a new scientific theory, so the history lecture of this unit looks at the reactions both favorable and unfavorable to Darwin's theory of the Descent of Man among English and American scientists and religious figures. Students need to read the selections carefully: these are primary source materials, and as such use 19th century language conventions and terms we might not always be familiar with. Have the students note areas that don't make sense, and encourage them to raise questions on these in class.
Please discuss with your student the study questions at the end of the web lecture.
The proposal of evolution theory is often considered a part of biology, but it actually led to a number of "offshoot" sciences as people begin to think of the human species as something to be studied with the same methods that were used to study chemical elements or horses. In this science weblecture, we look at the "social sciences", and some of the advantages and drawbacks of studying people using scientific methodologies.
The mastery exercise questions will focus on the readings; encourage your student to do the exercise while doing the readings.
we look at several different reactions to Darwin, from enthusiastic reception to cautious scientific criticism, to concern over the implications for both human rights and theology. students should take notes on the ratings and bring questions to class.
