The models of community that obtained in western Africa (in many places almost devoid of larger states) differed sharply from the much more elaborate political structures on the Swahili coast. What are the implications of these different levels of social organization for economic activity, trade, and culture? Do the long-term results bear out your general expectations? Again, this is not expecting an exhaustive answer (it would scarcely be possible); it's rather to get you thinking about things that we can develop in discussion.
