We have discussed the family as the basic unit of most communities, certainly for most humans, even if they chose other communities in adulthood. We have also talked about how roles change with respect to gender, class, and wealth, and how people identify with city, nation, or empire. Consider the community, both in the small sense and the large:

• How does the family change during the Industrial Revolution?
• How does identification with or loyalty to one’s “place” (both social and geographical) change during this period?
